Blockbuster's Televison

As seen today on Blockbuster's website. We're mainly into the movie rental thing; why should we care if we spell "television" wrong?

We's Lorem Ipsum Dolore

Not exactly a typo, I suppose, but worth noting: a commercial for the We Network's new website slaps us the ol' "Lorem Ipsum Dolore," the dummy text based on Cicero that's been an industry standard since the 1500s. It's not supposed to be distracting, but I can't imagine having missed it.

"Today Show" Febuary Stats

From today's broadcast; another "Today Show" typo or creative phonetic spelling? You decide.

CNET's Readibility Problems

CNET shows its spelling prowess in this new YouTube video comparing the Kindle 2 and the Sony PRS-700. For my money you lose some of your credibility on eReaders when you can't spell words like "readability" right.

L.A. Daily News' Endosement

It might have been okay in the '60s, when everybody was endosing everybody, but in the more reasonably-minded '00s the Daily News should just say no. These kind of shenanigans never went down when I was working there! Thanks to Debbie for the great catch.

French Alcool Sans Typo

In honor of the Fifth Annual Rabbit Hole Day, during which bloggers are encouraged to post something atypical, I offer the non-typo above.

When I was up north with my family during the holidays, I noticed this packet in the hotel room when the word "alcool" caught my eye. "Oh boy," thought I. "My first French typo!" After all, it didn't fit with any type of French word phonetics I knew of, and it just looked too silly to be real.

I was wrong. My wife appreciated the free packet of make-up remover I'd hauled home, though.

Whole Foods' Box of Rasins

Whole Foods Market is the largest retailer of natural and organic foods in the world. They are a founding partner in Revolution Foods, which also includes a charitable component dedicated to educating kids about healthy eating and nutritious food, but apparently not about spelling.

Biggest Loser's Amercia

There's our America. There's Sarah Palin's America. And then of course there's the Amercia of "The Biggest Loser." It wasn't until later that I noticed the non-question of the next line, "In 1985, it was a size?" Looks like NBC may win top honors for most gaffes in the truncated first year of Cap'n Typo.

Associated Press Defeats Thursday Night

Remember how great you felt the first time you conquered Monday morning? Or the numb elation that crept over you when you and your high school buddies vanquished your first Saturday night? That's how the Portland Trailblazers must have felt last night when they beat not only the Phoenix Suns, but all of Thursday evening. And since it went out over the wire, you can find this one at the Sporting News, Fox Sports/MSN, and even the usually respectable Ottawa Sun. Thanks yet again to Pete, who must now be recognized as the official Cap'n Typo Sports Beat reporter.

KNBC's "Yes Yes" Proposition

Here's an oldie from an election of yore, courtesy of KNBC in Los Angeles. Talk about a "win win" proposal. Add it all up and the voters agree 100%--stop state funding!

Yahoo Sports Unaware of "Awared" Award

Doh! Thanks again to my friend Eagle-Eye Pete for this one.

A "Today Show" Triple in Under 10 Minutes!

During Friday's "Today Show" broadcast, the voice-over read "Every day 67 families find out..." while the fancy graphic sported the common and erroneous mash-up everyday. Then just nine minutes later, the graphics guys turned what should have read "Day Care" into a child's scrawl of Daycare while the title folks added their two cents with childcare. Nice triple play!

"Extra" Superbowl Stupidity

Hey, NBC! Somebody from the ad department might want to tell those yokels over at "Extra" to learn how to spell the name of your biggest cash cow of the year. Idiosos!

Ellen's Backseat Makeout

When I saw this song list for a fictional album on the commercial teaser for today's episode of "Ellen" I thought I had a two-fer, but you'll have to decide for yourself about "backseat," which I thought would be two words here. The one-word version yields just under six million hits on Google, while the two-word version shows up over eight million times. Webster's not only lists it as a word but dates it back to the 1700s, while Oxford doesn't recognize it in noun form at all and offers the hyphenate "back-seat" as an adjective, which this isn't. But even assuming the party responsible favors Webster, that's no excuse for the mash-up of "makeout."

"Good Morning America" Look-A-Like

Clearly preoccupied with its effort to make a funny pun about Conan O'Brien's support for Finland's President Tarja Halonen in 2006, "Good Morning America" forgets how to spell look-alike.

"Colbert Report" Sinks Titantic

Peabody Award, April 2, 2008. Emmy Award, September 13, 2008. Cap'n Typo's Lame Spelling Award, October 1, 2008. FYI, a search for the misspelling "Titantic" yields over 200,000 hits on Google. But we expect a bit more from our fake news programs.

Starz Trips on Pyschedelic

They must be putting something good in the tea over at Starz to induce the kind of pyschedelia found in this new TV ad for "Across the Universe." What would you expect from a company named Starz, itself part of a slur of names like Bratz and Razr that seem intent on plucking the English language apart one letter at a time?

"Survivor": Just Becuase

In honor of the new "Survivor" debuting this week, here's a classic gaffe to give people an idea of what to look for when appreciating producer Mark Burnett's attention to detail. And this is no third-rate cable job, mind you, but the #1 show in the country.

CNNMoney's Republican Balk

This just in from CNNMoney--Dems say they reached an agreement, but Republican balk! Look, I know we're in the midst of an economic crisis here, but let's not add to the confusion with hasty headlines.

Original is/was here.

Michael Moore Off Base with Camp Pendelton

I'm sure Michael Moore had the best of intentions when he tried to honor soldiers in this scene from his new film "Slacker Nation," but spelling the name of the base wrong is kinda bush-league. It's Camp Pendleton, Mike. But thanks for the free movie.
